A THOUGHTFUL, INSIGHT-ORIENTED

APPROACH TO THERAPY

Dr. Marina Lenderman

I believe meaningful change begins with understanding the emotional patterns we carry, the relationships that shape us, and the inner logic behind our reactions.

My work is grounded in the idea that symptoms are not problems to eliminate, but signals to be understood. Together, we explore how your inner world has been shaped, what may be keeping you stuck, and how insight can restore a sense of agency and choice.

Therapy, as I practice it, is not about fixing you. It is about helping you understand yourself well enough to move through life with greater clarity and intention.

THE PATH THAT LED ME HERE

I came to this work through a long-standing interest in how people make meaning of their experiences, particularly in moments of emotional complexity, relational strain, or transition.

Over time, I became especially drawn to helping people see the patterns shaping their inner and relational lives. Again and again, I’ve seen how insight, when developed collaboratively and at the right pace, can create lasting change.

My approach has been shaped by both formal training and nearly 20 years of clinical work with individuals, couples, and families navigating real-life challenges.

HOW THE WORK TAKES SHAPE

In my work with clients, I draw from psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems, and emotionally focused therapy (EFT, for couples). Each of these approaches offers a different lens. I integrate these modalities based on what will be most useful at a given moment in the healing process.

Sessions often involve noticing patterns as they show up in real time, in thoughts, emotions, relationships, and reactions, while also addressing the accompanying distress. This balance allows for a reduction in immediate strain, without losing sight of the deeper dynamics influencing the experience.

For individuals, this may mean exploring longstanding relational patterns while also developing tools to manage anxiety, mood, or self-critical thinking. For couples, the work focuses on emotional dynamics, attachment needs, and the ways partners communicate and respond to one another under stress.

Rather than following a fixed protocol, treatment is tailored and responsive. This allows me to go deep when appropriate, stay present with what’s emerging, and adjust the pace as needed.

WHO THIS WORK SERVES BEST

I tend to work best with individuals and couples who:

  • Are curious about their inner lives

  • Want to understand patterns, not just manage symptoms

  • Are open to reflection and dialogue

  • Value a collaborative, thoughtful process

My approach may not be the right fit for those seeking:

  • Highly directive or solution-only therapy

  • Immediate symptom elimination without exploration

  • A prescriptive or coaching-style dynamic

I offer sessions both in person in Manhattan and remotely for clients located elsewhere, depending on licensure and fit.

In-person sessions are held by appointment at:
